Slough Council for Voluntary Service (Slough CVS) is working together with Slough Borough Council and local groups to coordinate an army of volunteers to help people in the borough through the One Slough initiative.

Through the One Community Response call out for volunteers we had an amazing 268 people come forward. It was such an overwhelming response we had to close the recruitment so we could process and place everyone. There are so many more people who are already volunteering through groups such as the Foodbank, Home-start, Slough Outreach and the large numbers who are volunteering through faith groups. Businesses have also come forward to support One Community Response request for volunteers including Metro Bank who sent some of their staff to help with sorting out food packages at the Langley Hub.
To date we have placed volunteers in roles from Wellbeing Friends, Dog Walking, Shopping Assistant Volunteers, Pharmacy Collectors and supporting the delivery of food at Langley College. We are looking to place lots more in the coming weeks to meet the needs of the community.
Yvette Hockley, SCVS Volunteer Coordinator said, “I have felt really honoured to be in a position to help the community during this current crisis and been amazed at what we, Slough have achieved by coming together. I have been humbled to hear of the amazing work that is going on to get people food, medication and company so that the most vulnerable in our community can stay safe, I couldn’t be prouder to be a small part of this effort. I want to thank everyone who has contributed and especially to the volunteers who have given their time, effort and expertise to make Slough a place to be even prouder of.”
Yvette has been working alongside Ciaran Crean, Senior Active Communities Officer, Slough Borough Council to process the volunteer enquiries.
Ciaran said, “I’ve been redeployed with SCVS since Monday 23rd March, my regular day job is in the Active Slough team at Slough Borough Council (check out our weekly online physical activity programme via www.facebook.com/activeslough). I was tasked with contacting and screening online volunteer applications, we received over 200 applications in the first couple of weeks, so it was lots of phone calls. Every single person I spoke to was enthusiastic about helping in any way possible, lots of volunteers were already supporting family members and neighbours but still very generous with their time.
Volunteers have now been deployed into a variety of roles, I just hope they realise their individual contributions are making a huge collective difference to some of Slough’s most vulnerable residents.”
